About The Circle

Soldiers and Sailors Monument, widely known as Monument Circle, was fully built in 1902 to commemorate heroes who died in wars before World War I.  The Circle is the center point of the downtown Indianapolis area where there is always something fun to experience!  Ride through the streets in a horse drawn carriage, cruise around town on an electric scooter, or view parts of the city from the Arts garden that hovers over the intersection of Washington and Illinois Street. You can even catch a flick after shopping at the Circle Centre Mall, or a baseball game after a long day of work!

Did you know?

  • Indianapolis has the 2nd most monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans, only behind Washington D.C!
  • The construction for Monument Circle was nearly 129 years ago!
  • Monument Circle is only 15 feet away from being as tall as the Statue of Liberty!
  • Before the Monument, the circle was home to the Governor’s residence!
  • The Eiteljorg Museum is home to many of the greatest Native American artwork in the world!
  • Run over the Famous Indiana Central Canal!
  • The Indiana State House was built in 1888, and was the 5th capitol building in the state!
  • The Soldiers and Sailors Monument was officially designated a National Historic Landmark on January 13, 2017
